Our dog, Eldred, and I walk most days, morning and evening. We walk through the neighborhood down to the river, along the harbor, to our dog park, and back through Old Town Pittsburg. Eldred checks every bush and tree for pesky lizards, squirrels, and cats. I just talk to people and take in the sights.

Over time, I noticed one of our neighbor’s wind chimes slowly deteriorating. Our high winds here in Pittsburg busted all the strings and the header that holds the chimes had broken into pieces until it fell to the ground. I picked it up and asked the homeowner for permission to restring it. No cost to him … just a fun project for me.

I replaced all the strings on the broken chime, plus cut a wooden header to replace the plastic one. It was very meditative for me, like working on a puzzle. Our neighbor was so pleased to see I had restored it to “like new.” He was so pleased he handed my wife and me two gift cards from Starbucks, $30 each, as a thank you! What a surprise!

At our home, we have more than 8 wind chimes that I have restored. I find the sounds of wind chimes very soothing and I am happy to have them sharing musical magic again.

And, what a joy to see and hear my neighbors’ chimes restored when I walk by their house.
